“Not to Exclude You, But…”: Uncovering and Mitigating Bias in Academic Pharmacy

Implicit bias and microaggressions both can limit an individual’s and organization’s capacity to cultivate inclusive workplaces and workforces. This 3-part interactive session is designed for those who wish to explore implicit bias, implicit stereotypes, and microaggressions for improved patient experiences, employee engagement, workplace culture, and community engagement.  In the first part, participants will discover their own biases through riddles, images, and “eye-opening” activities. In the second part, through interactive group activities, the myth of meritocracy, myth of positive stereotypes, and harm of stereotypes will be explored. Finally, participants will discuss common microaggressions, hidden messages in microaggressions, and ways to interrupt microaggressions. Cultivating empathy is a priority as attendees will engage in perspective taking by listening to their peers describe their experiences with microaggressions in the workplace.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify personal bias and stereotypes – and ways to respond more effectively.
  2. Define and articulate the harm of microaggressions.
  3. Describe how you will connect today’s concepts to your personal and organization’s mission.

Speaker: Nicole D. Avant, Pharm.D., BCACP Founder and Owner, Avant Consulting Group

Rethinking Diversity Equity Inclusion Strategy Development

There is evidence of racism, discrimination, and implicit bias in societal infrastructures leading to persistent inequality of opportunity. Society is becoming more global, increasing the demand for skillsets and the ability to work effectively across cultures. Research shows that diverse teams make decisions faster, perform better, and the ability to innovate increases. The challenge is translating agreement in the value of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) into strategic and impactful actions. This session will help participants develop a plan to create cultural transformation in their organization and assess the impact of the plan.  A successful plan involves engagement and accountability across the organization, creating an infrastructure, developing metrics that provide insight on performance, and a responsive process that can adapt to new information and environmental changes.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe an organizational approach to addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion through infrastructure and strategy development.
  2. Discuss the accountability framework needed to implement, monitor and evaluate progress of strategic priorities.
  3. Reflect on considerations and implications for School and unit level plan development.
  4. Identify tools for assessment of a DEI strategic plan.

Speakers: Carla White, B.S., Associate Dean, Organizational Diversity and Inclusion, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy; Michael Fulford, Ph.D., Director of Assessment Interim, Lead for Faculty Affairs, University of Georgia College of Pharmacy

What in the World Does D&I Have to do With Pharmacy & Panel Discussion

Simply developing a diversity plan is not enough.  Without a defined action plan that involves individual responsibility in working toward systemic and cultural change in an organization, we can remain static and simply do a lot of talking and not enough walking.  However, changing systems and culture around diversity, equity, and inclusion is truly a daunting task.  During this session, Dawn D. Bennett-Alexander will provide insight, tips, and inspiration that can help your organization take practical steps toward creating a truly inclusive and equitable environment that values diversity.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe barriers and challenges to making a diversity plan actionable.
  2. Discuss practical steps your organization can take to create a culture that values in word and action diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  3. Explain why it is necessary for all employees to be advocates for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in your organization.

Speaker: Dawn Bennett-Alexander, J.D., Founder, Practical Diversity and Tenured Associate Professor of Employment Law and Legal Studies, University of Georgia Terry College of Business;
