AACP Funded Research Grant Data (FRGD) Collection

AACP Article

The annual Funded Research Grant Data (FRGD) report captures research funding from all extramural sources (e.g., NIH and other federal funding agencies, associations, foundations, industry, state agencies) to Principal Investigators (PI, including MPI and Project Leads on NIH grants) or Co-PIs/Co-Investigators (Co-I) who are faculty members, staff, and/or trainees (students, postdoctoral fellows, and residents) at colleges and schools of pharmacy. For inclusion in the FRGD report, the funded work must include aims and scope that will create new knowledge or develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge in education, health, technology, practice or patient care. The funded work must be investigator-initiated, competitive and peer-reviewed.

This page is intended to provide uniform guidance on what grants and awards should be included in the FRGD report submitted by colleges and schools of pharmacy. A checklist for determining eligibility of individuals awards is also available

What funded work is eligible for inclusion in the annual FRGD report?

  • Funded work included in the FRGD report must be investigator-initiated, competitive and peer-reviewed.
    • The funds must be competed outside the college or school or pharmacy; university-wide or other limited competition awards should be included.
    • Although gifts or endowments cannot be included in the FRGD report, competitive awards funded through a gift or endowment can be included.
  • Research awards from extramural sources, e.g., NIH R awards, research grants and contracts from other federal funding agencies, associations, foundations, industry, state agencies.
  •  Funding for research instrumentation.
  • Funding for research conferences.
  • Funding for research awarded to college or school of pharmacy faculty, staff or trainees through the VA.
  • Funding to support research capacity building, e.g., Department of Education Research and Development Infrastructure Grants and NIH IDeA grants.
  • Individual and institutional research training and career development awards, e.g., NIH T, F and K awards, fellowships and fellowship programs from federal funding agencies, associations, foundations, and industry.
    • The funds must be competed outside the college or school or pharmacy; university-wide or other limited competition awards should be included, e.g., KL2 or similar awards.
  • Service, education or demonstration programs with a research component.
    • For inclusion in the FRGD report, funded work must go beyond quality improvement or practice expansion and include aims or objectives to create new knowledge or develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. Examples include HRSA Center of Excellence awards which support research fellowship programs; state or federally funded technical assistance centers which support implementation and evaluation of new public health interventions; and education awards which develop and test new pedagogical approaches. See below for examples of what not to include. An award with a research aim is included in full in the FRGD report, even if not all award aims are research aims.
  • Funding for public health surveillance activities, including collection, testing and/or analysis of information or biospecimens to identify and understand public health signals or conditions of public health importance, including those related to medication use.
    • The funded activities must develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge that advances practice or education models through measurement or evaluation of impacts, including patient outcomes. The results of the funded activities will be shared through publication or presentation.

What funded work is not eligible for inclusion in the FRGD report?

  • Funding to support pharmacy services, operation and consultation (e.g. Drug Information Center, Poison Control Center, VA Pharmacy, etc.) that are not part of clinical trials, implementation research or public health research projects, etc.
  • Funding for drug utilization review or similar studies intended for program assessment or other programmatic purposes or provision of standard pharmacy services.
  • Funding to support service-oriented patient education and care, including quality improvement and practice expansion projects without research aim(s) or scope of work.

  • Gifts and endowments beyond any amount used to fund a competitive award.
  • Travel awards.

  • Institutional/intramural support programs such as seed or bridge programs.
  • Awards made to faculty at the college or school of pharmacy through external research institutions or companies, where funds do not flow to the college/school to support research efforts.

Who are eligible investigators for inclusion in the annual FRGD report?

  • Investigators with faculty appointments, staff positions, trainee positions or student enrollment in the college or school of pharmacy.
    • For faculty with joint academic appointments to the college/school of pharmacy and another academic unit, awards will be prorated to their FTE level at the college/school of pharmacy as measured by base salary support. Schools that believe a different proration is appropriate should include justification in the FRGD report.
  • Investigators whose salary is paid by the college or school of pharmacy.
  • Investigators who have significant research or other research-relevant responsibilities in the college/school of pharmacy and make a significant contribution to the mission of the college/school.
    • When reporting awards for investigators without appointment or position in the college/school of pharmacy or salary support from the college/school of pharmacy, schools should provide supporting information on the role of the investigator in the college/school of pharmacy and the appropriate FTE level of their effort.

Who are not eligible investigators for inclusion in the annual FRGD report?

  • Investigators who hold only courtesy appointments to the college of school of pharmacy should not be included in the FRGD report.
  • Investigators who have faculty appointments or staff positions outside the college or school of pharmacy and have no responsibilities in the college/school of pharmacy other than providing instruction in the professional pharmacy program should not be included in the FRGD report.
