Hosted by the Health Disparities and Cultural Competence SIG
Professional identity formation (PIF) has been discussed in pharmacy academia as a means to help students think, act, and feel like a pharmacist. However, many publications evaluate PIF through a dominant culture lens which does not capture or discuss underrepresented and minoritized student experiences. This session will explore alternatives to PIF to support underrepresented and minoritized students in developing their authentic and genuine selves as pharmacists.
Objectives:
- Discuss how professional identity formation (PIF) appears in the literature from a dominant lens.
- Discuss the potential impact of not considering underrepresented and minoritized students’ lived experiences in PIF.
- Engage in conversations about how use of the PIF framework will impact minoritized students.
