National Reports

PharmCAS Applicant Data Report 2022-2023 - A summary report that provides aggregate data on applicants and applications to colleges and schools of pharmacy for the current cycle, as well as trend data for past cycles.

AACP Student Applications, Enrollment and Degrees Conferred Reports - AACP surveys gather information from colleges and schools of pharmacy on their application pool, enrollments and degrees conferred. The data from these surveys are published annually within the Profile of Pharmacy Students.

National Matching Service Inc. ASHP Match Statistics - Provides a summary graph of Phase I Match Trends over the past 9 years and summative reports of residency programs, positions, applicants, and applicant schools participating in the ASHP residency match process for the past 5 years.

NABP Examination Pass Rates - A summary report that provides aggregate data on NAPLEX and MPJE pass rates for individual colleges and schools of pharmacy in the United Sates, as well as the national average and standard deviation for the past three years.

NABP E-Profile Aggregate Data Report - A summary of demographic and practice-related information on the United States-licensed pharmacists provided by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).

ASHP National Survey of Pharmacy Practice in Hospital Settings - The ASHP national surveys are conducted annually to describe the workforce, practices, and technologies used in hospitals and health-systems.

APhA, ASHP, NABP Implementing Solutions Report: Building a Sustainable, Healthy, Pharmacy Workforce and Workplace - In June 2023 APhA, along with ASHP and NABP, convened an invitational summit. The final report lays out actions to implement solutions to improve workplace conditions by addressing day-to-day challenges, removing obstacles to well-being, and advancing practice models for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

ASHP Pharmacy Technician Shortage Survey Findings - Executive summary report published in March 2022 containing results from two online surveys in 2021 used to better understand the pharmacy technician shortage in hospitals and health-systems.

APhA Community Pharmacy Workplace Summit Report - In February 2022 APhA convened a summit to discuss the challenges faced by community-based pharmacy personnel. The final report summarizes ideas and next steps generated to address the issues identified.

APhA/NASPA National Pharmacy Workplace Survey - A 2021 national pharmacy workplace survey was conducted to learn more about pharmacy workplace issues from pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists across all practice settings. Nearly 7,000 respondents from across the country and practice settings participated in this study.

Assessing the Size and Scope of the Pharmacist Workforce in the U.S. - A 2020 report by the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University of Washington that aimed to identify the many different settings where pharmacists work, their current and emerging roles, and the barriers and facilitators to greater involvement of pharmacists in patient care.

The Pharmacist Workforce in The U.S. – A September 2020 rapid response brief by the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University of Washington that summarized supply, distribution, education pathways, and state responses to emergency surges in demand related to COVID-19.

Pharmacist Demand Indicator (PDI) - A quarterly national survey to provide information regarding the demand for pharmacists that was done from September 2016 through January 2019. The data from this survey was provided by panelists whose organizations were directly involved in hiring pharmacists. This report was replaced by the Pharmacy Demand Report (PDR) in 2020.

Health Workforce Planning in OECD Countries - A 2013 review paper describing 26 projection models of health workforce planning in 18 OECD Countries.

Out of Order, Out of Time: The State of the Nation's Health Workforce - A 2008 report by the Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC) to focus attention on the critical need for a new, collaborative, coordinated, national health workforce planning initiative.

ASHP Task Force Report - A 2007 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Task Force Report on the Changing Demographics of the Pharmacy Workforce.

Professionally Determined Need for Pharmacy Services in 2020 - The final report from a Fall 2001 conference convened by the Pharmacy Manpower Project, Inc. (now known as the Pharmacy Workforce Center) which was attended by 24 individuals from the community, hospital, and managed-care sectors of pharmacy practice; colleges and schools of pharmacy; industry; and government.

The Pharmacist Workforce: A Study of the Supply and Demand For Pharmacists - In December 2000, HRSA released this study in response to Congress’s 1999 request to the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct a study to determine whether and to what extent there was a shortage of licensed pharmacists and to seek comments regarding such a shortage.
