Lucinda Maine Receives Remington Honor Medal, Highest Honor in Pharmacy

Washington, D.C. – Lucinda L. Maine, Ph.D., FAPhA, of Arlington, Va., is the recipient of the 2019 Remington Honor Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and is the profession’s highest recognition. Maine is Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). She was selected in recognition of her decades of excellence as a leader on the national and global levels, as a role model and mentor, and in providing a strategic approach to fulfill a vision for pharmacy and pharmacy education that has resulted in better patient care and better health for the world. She has led the nation’s colleges of pharmacy to create education that supports that vision.

The Remington Honor Medal, named for eminent community pharmacist, manufacturer, and educator Joseph P. Remington, was established in 1918 to recognize distinguished service on behalf of American pharmacy during the preceding years, culminating in the past year or during a long period of outstanding activity or fruitful achievement. Maine will be officially recognized during the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Seattle, March 22–25, 2019. The APhA awards and honors program is the most comprehensive recognition program in the profession of pharmacy.

Dr. Maine “strives to do and achieve what is ultimately right for the profession of pharmacy, and right for the patients served through the profession.”

During these “very difficult and dynamic times in the nation’s colleges of pharmacy,” Maine has continued to be “a calm but passionate, caring, extremely strategic and visionary leader at the important intersection of education, science and practice.”

From a Nomination Letter

One letter of support said that Maine’s passion is “rooted in those early APhA leadership roles.” Another letter of support said that Maine “embodies the very essence of an exemplary leader—she inspires others with her passion, challenges the process, and shares her vision for the future. To top that off, she is a genuinely good person.”

Maine previously served as Senior Vice President for Policy, Planning, and Communication and in other roles at APhA from 1992 to 2002. She also served as Interim Dean, Associate Dean for Student/Alumni Affairs and Director of Professional Relations and Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Samford University School of Pharmacy from 1986 to 2001. Maine has delivered over 200 research and practice development programs during her time at AACP and APhA as well as commencement addresses at colleges and schools of pharmacy. She also has published numerous editorials, committee reports, research and professional articles, and book chapters.

Her previous awards from APhA include recognition as a Fellow of APhA in 2003 and the APhA Franke Mentorship Award in 2018, APhA Foundation Jacob Miller Award in 2009, and APhA Academy of Students of Pharmacy Linwood F. Tice Award in 2004. Maine also was inducted into the Alabama Pharmacy Hall of Fame in 2017 and recognized as a Fellow of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 2014, along with countless other honors. Maine received her pharmacy degree at Auburn University and her Kellogg Pharmaceutical Clinical Scientist Ph.D. in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. Maine has also received honorary doctorates from Western University and Ohio Northern University.
