Looking Through Your Crystal Ball: Strategizing for Long-Term Preparedness for Global Health Emergencies
Hosted by the Global Education SIG.
Failing to plan is planning to fail. Participation in short-term medical service trips (MSTs) and other global health programs comes with the responsibility to ethically and competently ensure preparedness. MSTs are often reactive to emergent needs, often without sustainability. To ensure effective and efficient engagement, faculty must be competent in emergency preparedness and response. Participants will leave with self-assessment tools, checklists, and cases to incorporate into their curriculum to support emergency preparedness and response.
Objectives:
- Describe ethical considerations and competencies required for pharmacists during emergencies and disaster relief situations.
- Discuss the stages of disaster and emergency preparedness and response and apply self-assessment strategies and tools to each stage.
- Apply emergency preparedness checklists to humanitarian response scenarios including consideration of the role of students.
