Our latest member spotlight is Jamie Leigh Wagner, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP. Dr. Wagner is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. Jamie spoke to Matt Cipriani, AACP Director of Member Engagement, about her career in academia and experience with AACP.
I resonate most with AACP’s strategic priority #1 (Leading the Transformation of Pharmacy Practice) because this priority shows that change is important and necessary to keep the profession ahead of the curve. It also demonstrates AACP’s willingness to be a change leader and to set examples for the Academy that the adage “It’s how we’ve always done it” is no longer sufficient in today’s world. Change is good, healthy, and when done together, far less intimidating.
I wanted a career where I could impact the most people possible, and academia gave me that avenue. My high level of energy and motivation complements this goal by driving me to not only push myself to be better than I was yesterday, but to also encourage those around me to do the same. I also find ways to better connect with students in individual ways, thereby offering them encouragement in a way that seems personalized to them. I try to act as a leader, an educator, a guide, a role model, an inspiration, and a positive example to all my students. I have a quote on my desk that reads “I want someone to look at me and say, ‘Because of you, I didn’t give up’.” This truly helps me stay motivated in trying to form those connections, trying to figure out different ways to reach each individual student to help them learn and grow, and in turn, give them the knowledge and courage to help others learn and grow. All of this helps me to impact as many people as possible.
The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don’t tell you what to see.
While my high levels of energy and motivation can be useful, they can also be a limitation for me in that I find it challenging to recognize my limitations and set boundaries. I’ve had several instances where I’ve lost track of my commitments and become overwhelmed. However, each experience has taught me something new about myself that allows me to continue to grow and develop into a better educator, mentor, and advisor.
I have been a member of AACP since my first year on faculty in 2015, and I’ve enjoyed each year more and more. I find such incredible value in being a member of AACP and notice that my appreciation for the organization and what it’s been able to accomplish and aims to accomplish in the future continues to grow each year.
AACP has helped me and my career in so many ways that it’s challenging for me to pick just one way. However, I cannot emphasize enough the importance all the relationships and connections I’ve made due to my involvement within AACP. I count so many people as not just acquaintances, but as colleagues, friends, mentors, and mentees that will stay with me for the rest of my career.
